Our team of students explored ideas such as foldable rugs, upcycling old samples into soft seating, glow in the dark, led activated, sculptural artistic rugs, and material innovation milk yarn dyed with onion skins. Our core strategy was promoting the artisans, collaborating with them in the design process, and honoring the value of the skilled and handmade. We worked with trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort as a mentor to develop a color palette and operated between New York and Mirzapur for sampling. I along with three other students had the opportunity to work for a month sampling flat-woven, hand-knotted, and machine tufted options with the skilled rug weavers at the Obeetee factory in Mirzapur in India. The final designs were presented at the Obeetee showroom in New York in September 2019.
